Speech Problems??

Sydney turned 3 in February. When we took her for her 3 year check up the pediatrician started his speech therapy song and dance just like he did at her 2nd year check up.
I personally have never noticed anything wrong with her speech. She, like most kids, leaves out the -ing sometimes, or replaces -d with a -b sound. Sometimes other people would have to ask what she is saying, but isn't it that way with most children her age?

Anyway, at the 3 year check up, he told us that we needed to contact our school board agency ASAP and get Syd started in speech therapy. I was so skeptical about doing so, but I figured that the Dr. would know better than me, and I want her to be successful in school, so I contacted them.

The first step was a meeting with a few school board reps. So we found ourselves in a cramped little room, with several older gentleman, who have doctorates in education. They "observed" Sydney for all of 10 minutes. Then quickly concurred with the Dr. They said she was a definite candidate for speech therapy, and had a certified school therapist contact us.

So today at 1, we took her to one of the local elementary schools to meet with the therapists. They played with her, and gave her little tests for about an hour. Talked with us about her speech habits, and said, "These guys are crazy!! Sydney has no speech delays, she is actually a bit ABOVE her age level!"

Yay Sydney!! I knew I should have listened to my gut-mother instincts and not even called anybody about it to start with.
Stupid school boards...stupid pediatricians :)

I was thinking

I was thinking that maybe I should introduce myself and my family, so you'll know more about me. Might make things a little easier to read about :)

I suppose I should start with me, I never really know what to say, so I'm gonna wing it. I'm Autumn. Sydney's VERY proud mommy!!! I work as a 911 dispatcher, the fancy title being Communications Officer, for our county's Sheriffs Office. I love my job. I feel like I am contributing to society, and helping people who really need it out. I am also a volunteer fireman...firewoman I guess.
I have lived in this same small county my whole life, and hope to stay here until the end. I can't imagine living anywhere else.
I have the best Mom and Dad ever, along with the greatest big brother. We are all super close! I love having dinner when all of us are together. Although the volume is very loud, as we all try to outdo each other with telling stories!
I have lots of good friends. But they are all mainly people I work with. Reason being--if you don't work in law enforcement you don't really understanstand what we go through. I mostly like staying at home, probably because too many criminals know who I am, and I don't want to introduce them to my family.
Yeah so that's enough I have no idea what else to say about me.

Meet Scotty, aka Medic Daddy. Yes, he is on the teeter totter thing at the play ground. But not to worry Sydney is on the other end.

He grew up in Massachusttes (sp) and moved to Virginia after he graduated to attend Virginia Tech. He was raised on a dairy farm, along with his 2 older sisters and 1 older brother. He has a degree from Tech in computer something or other (sorry for not knowing the fancy name) but he makes a living running EMS, as a medic. Sometimes he thinks he should get a "real" computer job, but I think he should keep on doing what he loves best...saving people. Mainly because he is damn good at it.

He is the best Daddy Sydney could ever have asked for. He doesn't get to see his family as much as he wants too, but my family has pretty much adopted him.

This is Sydney!! She just turned 3 on February 24th. She is the sweetest little girl ever. She is smart, funny and never meets a person she doesn't want to be friends with.( I worry about that sometimes though) There is never a dull moment when she is around. She is a big PePaw's girl. When he's around the rest of us become chopped liver! She loves cheese, chocolate, trains, baseball, and her John Deere boots. She will rarely ever wear any other shoes. She even wants to sleep in them. She is a tomboy, just like her mom was. She has zero interest in dolls or anything else that can be seen as girly!
She is the light of our lives!!

And last but not least our cat, Callie. In this photo she is doing what she does best of course. We went to the animal shelter back in October just to look around. When we came through the cat room door, Sydney said, "Mommeeeee, that's my kitty!" So she came home with us. Lucky for her too, she only had until the end of the day to find a home before....well you know. I think this cat is a saint or an angel. Sydney loves to chase her and love on her. And Callie puts up with it.

So in a small nutshell that's me and my family!!!

A 911 weekend in review

So I was on midnights this weekend. 7 p.m. to 7 a.m. FUN FUN FUN!!!

My schedule is a bit hard to keep up with so I'll explain it to you..

Ok so I started midnight shift on Monday April 13th.
So I work Monday & Tuesday
Off on Wednesday & Thursday
Back to work on Friday, Saturday & Sunday
Then off Monday & Tuesday
Work Wednesday & Thursday
Off Friday Saturday & Sunday

Which brings us to Monday the 27th where I start back on daylights 7 a.m. to 7 p.m.
Work the same as above. Then repeat.
It's difficult at first but you eventually get the hang of it.

Unfortunately, your body doesn't. I never feel like I have enough sleep.
But anyway back to the subject at hand.

Friday night started out pretty slow. But didn't take long for it to pick up speed.
We had several shoplifting incidents, a few domestic disputes. Then my partner (aka the bane of my existance) went home at 1 a.m. Which means I got slammed.
I had a wreck called in. An intoxicated person stole a truck, hit a telephone pole, thereby breaking it in half, and the transformer off of the pole broke as well, sending slick oil all over the road. The intoxicated driver was smart enough to realize he better get the heck out of dodge and was gone by the time my deputy showed up.
Followed that up with the everyday loud music/party calls. And was able to be in bed Saturday morning by 8.

Back up at 1:30. Spent the rest of the day playing with my Sydney.

Back to work Saturday night at 7. Where upon all hell broke loose!!! Basically all b.s. type calls but enough of them to keep us hopping. I did get called a f-ing *itch though. Which always makes me laugh. Some lady locked her keys in her car at 4 in the morning, didn't like the fact that all of the deputies were tied up on actual emergencies. And proceeded to cuss me out. Oh well, wasn't the first time and certainly won't be the last.
My relief on Sunday morning decided that they needed to be a half hour late without telling me. I was pissed!!! So I didn't get in bed until 10 something.

Back up at 3 so we could take Ms. Sydney over to feed her baby calf (pictures to follow in another blog post)

Back to work Sunday night, which was a repeat of Saturday for the most part.

People really start to piss me off after 36 hours of listening to them.

Don't get me wrong, I love my job. I love helping people. But when it's the same people over and over who refuse to help themselves, it kind of makes you feel crummy.

Anyway, I have the next 2 off and I plan on enjoying them to the hilt. Even if the weather is crappy.

Here Goes Nothing

I just couldn't wait to jump on the blogging band-wagon. Late I know but you know what they say---better late than pregnant er.....never. Sorry :)

I am first and foremost a Mommy!! And secondly I am a 911 dispatcher. And thirdly a volunteer firefighter. Never a dull moment in any of those fields.

I have one daughter who just recently turned the big 3. She is so precious. I was one of those women who never wanted children. But an "accident" at 26 showed me how wrong I was for that line of thinking.

I live in Southwest Va. with my daughter obviously, and Medic Daddy. And before you ask no we are NOT married. Not likely to ever be married either: much to the dismay of some of our family members.

I hope everyone will bear with me as I start this, mainly because I have no earthly idea what I'm doing. But hopefully I can find some other "Blogging Mamas" who will be gracious enough to lend a hand every now and then.
